What is the true nature of birth and how can we align ourselves with its flow during labor and birth?
How can we gracefully clear and prepare ourselves for these exceptional experiences?
How can we instill positive images and expectations about birth, amidst the modern epidemic of “birthfright”
Filmmaker Elena Tonetti-Vladmirov shares the distilled wisdom of decades of observation and experience of natural birth, recreating in this film the power, wisdom and wonder of birth, for our bodies and our babies.
The film is visually enticing, its beautiful images and cinematography complementing Elena’s simple but powerful words. Most of the births that we see are in Russia, including some of the famous Black Sea births, where mothers give birth gently in warm lagoons, but others are on dry land or in hospital.
We are also privileged to witness a mother in Hawaii giving birth in total pleasure: this footage was later used in the film Orgasmic Birth.
We learn about the commitment, preparation and ‘deep soul searching’ necessary for conscious birth, gaining a road map for birth that challenges us to wake up to ourselves and our bodies so that our full capacity for birth can also awaken.
The midwives and families present as real “amateurs”- a word that means “lovers”- of birth, and their skills and wisdom, gained through experience and close observation of what really works for mothers and babies, helps us all to look at pregnancy and birth with fresh eyes. Especially touching is the involvement and post-birth reflections from fathers.
The long-term implications of birth, for mother and baby are emphasized. We see footage of cesareans and of circumcision, which are presented from the baby’s perspective.
The DVD is powerful in its entirety, but also is broken into chapters that could be used in childbirth education.

Sarah’s comments: This is one of my favorite birth films. Birth As We Know It resonates with my experiences and knowledge about birth, both embodied and cerebral.
Watching these powerful and beautiful images, accompanied by Elena’s profound and elegant words, creates a strong imprint for pregnant women and their families. Birth As We Know It also touches on the “deep soul searching” that is essential preparation for natural birth. Playful, joyful, touching and a must-see for all involved with birth
